They think they will be heard because of their many words. Matthew 6:7 NIV
One Christian author writes: “The purpose of prayer is to release our faith – not repeat phrases over and over. For example, if I need forgiveness I can pray: ‘Lord, I lost my temper and I’m sorry. By faith I receive Your forgiveness, Amen.’ Or I can pray: ‘Lord, I’m so wretched. I can’t seem to do anything right. No matter how hard I try I’m always screwing up. I don’t know what I’m going to do – I’ve gotta stop getting mad. Please forgive me. I’ll never do it again. I feel so guilty, so bad; I don’t see how You can use me. Well Lord, I don’t feel much better but I’ll try to believe I’m forgiven.’ You’ll agree that the first prayer is much more effective than the second.”
Then she continues: “My problem was I didn’t have faith that my prayer would get through if it was simple, short and to the point. I’d fallen into the trap of the-longer-the-better. Most of the time I felt confused and unsure, as though I still hadn’t gotten the job done. But not anymore. Now I ‘keep it simple’ and I experience a much greater release of faith, plus I’ve confidence that God has heard and will answer.”
Be honest with yourself about your prayer life and make adjustments. If you’re not praying enough, pray more. If your prayers are too complicated, simplify them. If you need to keep them more of a secret, quit talking about them to everybody you meet. In other words – keep it simple!
