The Lord’s Prayer (1)
…LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY… LUKE 11:1
Jesus always led by example. One day Jesus’ disciples watched him praying. Afterwards they said: ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’ It was then that He gave them what’s become known as ‘The Lord’s Prayer.’ Can you remember when you last prayed it? If not, how come? Did you grow up saying it so often that it’s become boring? Or have you never actually taken the time to learn it off by heart? You should – it’s amazing – and powerful! ‘Well, the Lord’s prayer’s a bit old fashioned – a bit traditional – I just like to freewheel when I chat with God’. Fair enough, but in all your laid back matey-ness with God watch out because ‘When you pray, don’t babble on and on…’ (Matthew 6:7 NLT). There are actually lots of models of prayer in the Bible: prayers for guidance, for forgiveness, for unity, and none of them include waffle or babble! Here’s the score: when you pray it should be a) passionate b) scriptural c) intimate d) unhurried e) faith-filled. Take a moment to chew on each of those five things. They’re your keys to effective prayer. We only tend to keep doing stuff that we feel there’s a point to, so when prayer feels like it’s got no point, we quit. If that’s why you never pray The Lord’s Prayer, the look at it again and take up the challenge. For the next few days we’re going to go back to the only prayer Jesus Himself gave us to pray. And let’s face it, who knows more about prayer? Can you imagine Jesus giving us a prayer that wouldn’t move us, move God, or move and of the mountains we face? Exactly, so let’s get moving!
