The Lord’s Prayer (2)
… MATTHEW 6:9
Jesus taught His disciples to pray: ‘This, then, is how you should pray:”Our Father…”‘ (Matthew 6:9 NIV). The relationship you have with someone has a massive effect on the amount of security and confidence you feel when you approach them. So Jesus begins by getting this sorted out right at the start by saying: ‘Our father.’ Now, if you, like so many nowadays, have a father who was never there for you, or an abusive father who hurt you, or an emotionally vacant father who never showed you much love or acceptance, then there’s a whole new dimension of fatherhood waiting for you here. Don’t let your past rob you of this revelation. You can trust God. He really, really loves you. And the more you start believing that, the more you’ll open up to Him. Only as you do that can your wounded areas be healed. ‘Our Father’ – you are part of a massive global family who all find peace in His arms. So now you understand Who your’re talking to, and the relationship you have with Him, you can approach God as a child, knowing that He’ll be delighted to hear your voice. Your Heavenly Father is a promise making, promise keeping God. When two people in Bible days made a promise, it wasn’t a casual ‘call me sometime’ with no commitment. No, they sealed it with blood, meaning, ‘I’ll give my life for you if necessary.’ And we know that it wasn’t an empty promis. The cross of Jesus proves that God keeps his word. So, really enter into the Lord’s Prayer and find its source of power, we much be ready to speak those first two words loud and proud – Our Father.
