You’re not going to your mate’s house, you’re meeting royalty! Likewise, when Jesus told us to pray, ‘May your name be honoured,’ He was teaching us that there’s only one way to enter God’s presence. And it’s not with a shopping list of all the things you want. If the only time someone comes to visit you is when they need something, you’ll soon stop answering the door. So, when you pray to him, big him up! David tells us more about how to approach God: ‘Know that the Lord is God: It is he who made us, and we are his…Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise: give thanks to him, and praise his name’ (Psalm 100:3-4 NIV). When we close our eyes in prayer, we imagine our self walking through those great big fancy gates. God can hear us coming through because we’re making a Rukus about all the top stuff he’s done for us! Then we walk across His courtyard making a big fuss about Who He is: ‘My Saviour, my defender, my provider, my source of strength, the giver of my joy, the lover of my soul, the author and finisher of my faith.’ If you can express yourself when your favourite team’s winning or when your favourite X-Factor finalist wins the competition then you can definitely praise God! Whether you’re a morning person or a night person, the Bible says, ‘From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised’ (Psalm 113:3 NIV). The way to enter and to enjoy God’s presence – is by honouring His name. |
