When it comes to the history of golf, Ben Hogan is at the top. His accomplishments include 242 ‘Top 10′ finishes on the PGA tour. When he returned from the army in 1946, he won 30 major tournaments in the next 24 months. But on 2 February, 1949, his car crashed head-on with a Greyhound Bus and was almost killed. Initially the doctors doubted that he’d survive. Next, they predicted he’d never walk or play golf again. But within 16 months, he was walking down the 18th fairway of the Marion Gold Club in Pennsylvania, putting the finishing touches on a story book victory in the 1950US Open.
Today his name is mentioned with awe. People still comment on (a) his absolute unwillingness to settle for anything less than his best, (b) his radical commitment to practice, perfecting every facet of the game, and (c) his total concentration on the issue at hand. He liked to say, “The only shot that really matters in this game, is the next one.” No wonder he was a winner! Those qualities will take you to the top in any profession.
Do you want what successful people have? Start doing what successful people do! Here’s God’s formula: (1) “Train yourself to be godly… godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come… (2) Set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity… (3) Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching… (4) Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress” (1 Timothy 4:7-15 NIV).
