The following letter was written by a young Chinese communist to his girlfriend, breaking off their relationship, because of his devotion to the communist cause. Billy Graham published it in Call to Commitment.
“There is one thing I’m dead earnest about, and that is the communist cause. It is my life, my business, my religion, my hobby, my sweetheart, my wife, my mistress, my bread and meat. I work at it in the daytime and dream of it at night. Its hold on me grows, not lessens, as time goes on. Therefore, I cannot carry on a friendship, a love affair or even a conversation without relating it to this force which both guides and drives my life. I evaluate people, books, ideas and actions, according to how they affect this cause, and by their attitude toward it. I’ve already been in jail because of my ideals, and if necessary, I’m ready to go before a firing squad.”
Measure yourself by that standard! Paul writes, “I am already being poured out like a drink offering” (2 Timothy 4:6 NIV). Looking back, he considers every act he performed, a moment in which he gave a little more of himself to God; like the slow emptying of a glass of wine, on an Old Testament altar of sacrifice. He gave his wisdom, his time, his strength, his love – he gave all there was.
“How could he do that?” you ask. Because to Paul, Christ was everything!
